Women's basketball player pleads to 5th-degree felony

Jamilah Humes agreed to plead guilty to a charge of receiving stolen property, a fifth degree felony, yesterday morning at the Portage County Common Pleas Court.
The women's basketball player was indicted Jan. 2 for that charge as well as forgery, another fifth degree felony, for having a stolen credit card in her possession. The prosecution dropped the forgery charge yesterday.
Humes has yet to be sentenced, but Stephen Michniak, assistant prosecuting attorney, recommended that because she had no previous criminal record she should be placed on probation.
Humes was suspended from the university and the team last spring through Judicial Affairs. She is enrolled for the fall semester. Another women's basketball player, ChyTearra Kintchen, who has since transferred to Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn., was also charged in connection with the incident. Her pretrial hearing is June 27.
Athletic Director Laing Kennedy said that if Humes continues to make academic progress she will be eligible to play this fall. She is listed on the 2008-09 women's basketball roster.
