Secretary accused of stealing $12,000

A former administrative secretary accused of misappropriating at least $12,000 of university money plead not guilty Monday in Portage County Common Pleas Court. Jody Khlem, 32, of Leavittsburg, faces the charge of theft in office, a third-degree felony. According to police, Khlem used a university purchasing card to make personal purchases. (0) comments

Kent State students may have more opportunities to study abroad in coming years because of President Lester Lefton's recent travels overseas. Lefton spent much of the past month traveling to Turkey, Istanbul, Russia, Geneva and Florence, looking to find more opportunities for students to study abroad and to improve and evaluate programs already in place. Nursing students looking for a job after graduation may have to look beyond the Cleveland Clinic - if they smoke. As of Sept. 1, Ohio's second largest employer will no longer hire smokers. All applicants will be tested for nicotine, and the Clinic will offer free smoking cessation programs to prospective employees who smoke. (11) comments

The Ohio Department of Health is investigating complaints of smoking ban violations in Portage County. Jay Carey, director of public affairs at the Ohio Department of Health, said there are 93 complaints against Portage County businesses. Twenty-seven of those are in Kent. (0) comments

Kent Social Services volunteers wipe off long plastic tables. Families filter out of the doors of the South Water Street building slowly, some with food in hand.
