Despite a mechanical problem that left one bus immobile 15 miles from Kent, all 140 volunteers who took part in United for Biloxi safely returned from the Gulf Coast Saturday afternoon. Students, staff and faculty had spent spring break in Biloxi helping to rebuild lives and property damaged by Hurricane Katrina. (1) comment

Nicholas Zajac pleaded guilty to aggravated assault during a pre-trial court appearance March 23. Zajac was arrested Nov. 17 for pushing 25-year-old Dana Lim into the path of a tow truck in front of the Delta Upsilon house Oct. 29. Lim was critically injured that night. (4) comments

"That's so gay." It's a common phrase used in everyday language by middle school, high school and college-age students. In most cases, it's a phrase people say when they mean something is dumb or stupid. And use isn't limited to the straight population only. (8) comments

In a unanimous decision, New York City Council banned the use of the n-word. According to an article from Reuters, the moratorium includes no penalties but acts as a symbol to deter the word's use. Between 20 and 25 percent of college women nationwide have been victims of rape or attempted rape during their college careers, according to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center. Eta Sigma Gamma, Kent State's health education honorary society, is holding its second annual self-defense training class from 7:30 to 8:30 p. (0) comments

Lately, much focus has been on the restoration of downtown Kent. Now, with the Neighborhood Enrichment Plan, City Manager Dave Ruller hopes neighborhoods will get the same attention. Ruller said the motivation behind the plan is to create a broader framework for the community to monitor how well Kent's neighborhoods are doing. (0) comments

Kristen Kotz Daily Kent Stater Linda Ohrn-McDaniel, assistant professor in the School of Fashion Design, is holding a pattern-making workshop for students in New York City this summer. The total cost is about $3,500 for the workshop and housing. Two students will share one apartment, though the cost may go down if three students are put in an apartment together. (0) comments

A downtown Kent staple will be getting a new look this summer. Designs for a new patio as well as first floor renovations are in the works for Ray's Place. Owner Charlie Thomas said he is unsure of the total cost and square footage because Kent City Council has yet to approve the plans. (0) comments

The Fashion Student Organization is holding a knitting workshop April 17 in Rockwell Hall. The complimentary class, which is open to any interested participants, starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in Room 116 of Rockwell Hall. No registration is required. (0) comments

The university library is holding three more focus group sessions this week on the upcoming KentLink makeover. For going to an hour-long session, which will focus on sketches for the new Web site, participants will be served lunch and refreshments and receive $15 in FlashCash. (0) comments
