The streets ran green, the Guinness flowed free

Kegs 'n' Eggs In celebration of St. Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland, about 100 people were waiting to scarf down a breakfast of champions outside the Brewhouse Saturday morning. As early as 5 a.m., a sea of people dressed in green anxiously waited in the cold, ready to chug green beer and chow down on green eggs. (0) comments

Kent State was awarded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's 2007 Energy Star Combined Heat and Power Award March 1 for its leadership in energy use and management. Thomas Dunn, associate director for Campus Environment and Operations, said Kent State and Princeton were the only two universities in the country to receive the award. (0) comments

The Starchild Center is missing two important things: money and children. The center is meant to be a place for children in Portage County to get educational assistance and education majors in the College of Education, Health and Human Services to gain course experience. (0) comments

While many Kent State students spent Saturday drinking green beer, about 180 high school students from around the Ohio area descended on the Student Recreation and Wellness Center with more than a party on their minds. They were here to compete. The students, members of the Air Force Junior ROTC program, were at Kent State to take part in the annual JROTC Field Day. (0) comments

Bars on St. Patrick's Day were covered in green: green streamers, green shamrock signs, green leprechaun hats, green T-shirts that read "Kiss me, I'm Irish" and, of course, green beer. Kent area bartenders and managers have said that bars are currently mixing the green beer in-house instead of having beer distributors ship the beer already green. (0) comments

Silent auction benefits Biloxi trip

Two children's playhouses. A blimp ride. Mulch. These were some of the items sold at "An Irish Fling with a Cajun Kick," Kent State University United for the Gulf Coast's Project Playhouse Silent Auction held Saturday. The event was organized to raise money for next week's alternative Spring Break trip to Biloxi, Miss. (0) comments

Four years of Spanish in high school should mean something in college. Students who feel like they know enough to test out of a required class have the option to through the College Level Examination Program, which is offered each month and provides full credit for courses to students who meet the test score requirements. Kent State Tuscarawas continues to grow - in buildings and in enrollment. Fall 2006 marked the highest enrollment in campus history with 2,021 students, but Spring 2007 is not far behind. This semester the total enrollment is 1,871, which is the second highest spring semester in campus history and an 8. (0) comments

The Allocation Committee decided not to change the All Campus Programming Board's funding - 54 percent of the Undergraduate Student Activity Fund - at its final ad hoc meeting Friday. Members of the Mid-American Conference were busy over the weekend in NCAA Tournament play. Women's MAC Champion Bowling Green handled a bit of a test, defeating No. 10 Oklahoma State, 70-66. Behind Ali Mann's 16 points and 13 rebounds, the No. 7 seed Falcons advanced to the second round and will meet No. (0) comments

Four years ago this week, the U.S.-led war in Iraq began. Yesterday morning, twenty members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent stood on their church steps banging pots and pans for half an hour to draw awareness to this anniversary in a "Stand for Peace. (1) comment

Organizations in Kent seeking financial support, especially smaller ones, may have an easier time getting it in 2007 through the Celebrate Kent! Grant Program. Michael Weddle, the city's economic development coordinator, is in the process of creating a new application for this grant. (0) comments

Since the South Water Street Tops Market store closed in February 2005, times have been tough in the plaza. At least one store has moved, and others have closed down permanently, although a few are still open. Is this a sign of things to come in University Plaza now that Giant Eagle closed last month? Right now, business isn't exactly booming in the former Tops plaza. (0) comments

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and 30 Kent State students will be working at the 107th U.S. Open golf tournament this summer. While Woods and Mickelson are putting for millions of dollars on national television, the 15 hospitality management majors and 15 sport management majors will be earning credit hours toward their degrees and experience toward their future careers. As the end of the semester approaches, many Kent State students may be feeling anxiety, stress and depression. In extreme cases, these feelings can trigger suicidal thoughts. Fortunately, the College of Education, Health and Human Services has the highest ranked counselor education program in the country, according to the Academic Analytics' new Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index. Funding for HIV/AIDS education has been decreasing, but the number of new HIV/AIDS cases continues to rise. Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School and the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a study that indicated decreased funding for HIV/AIDS prevention education contributes to increases of HIV/AIDS cases.
