Seeing my best friend and his boyfriend of 5 years walk together hand in hand to prom, despite the discrimination and threats they had been getting for a month was amazing. They let their selves go on Prom night, they weren't afraid to be different, they weren't afraid to be who they really were. At after prom a teacher came up to them and told them they were sick individuals who had no right "gallivanting into prom like a couple of little fag boys for amusement." The teacher said it was sick and disturbing and that they were going to hell for doing it. When reported to the principal he just shrugged it off, saying he couldn't do anything about it. Both of them are going to be graduating this year from college. At their college they found a group of people who understood them for what they really are. Fun, out-going, happy go lucky guys. They are human to. They have feelings that get hurt when people make fun of them. Yes, at college they met gay-bashing people. But at college they had a wider group of support to help get through their day to day movements.
Don't support hate. Our biggest threat in the homosexual movement is those who do not support them. Because of those who think it is fine to taunt them and make fun of them, their have countless deaths that could have been avoided. Think of Lawrence King, the newest kid to get killed. He had a simple high school crush, we all had them...and that got him killed.
America needs to wake up...we are in a new day and age. We need to start showing love for the homosexual people. They are tired and worn out from being harassed and made fun of. They want rights that they are entitled to. Lets start showing them some support. Go to Pride Kent. Attend Pride festivals (they are fun, and they accept straight people there...I have gone many times). Start helping them get their voice out in the open. It's time for a change...
Adam I support you full heartedly for writing this letter. You are an amazing person for doing it. And I hope from this letter that a voice is heard and people start waking up to this. One can only hope though...
