Abstract:
When we hurt someone, it's only polite to apologize for it. On Saturday, the Virginia legislature passed a resolution to apologize for the state's role in slavery. Better late than never, right?
It's great that Virginia wants to take responsibility for its past wrongs....

If we're going to have people start apologizing for things they did wrong in their pasts, how about starting with Daimler-Chrystler, who profited highly from Jewish slave labor during the period of NAZI rule in Germany? Or better yet, how about we apologize to Iraq for invading them under false pretenses (cough cough, weapons of mass destruction, cough cough).
I'm glad the ed board is keeping up-to-date on current issues, but making out as if this is a step in the right direction is just plain wrong. We all know we cannot change the past, but we can indeed fix the present to change the future. Why doesn't America start focusing on correcting current racial problems, like making sure there is a fair distribution of funds for all schools, instead of just heaping cash on those in the rich white areas? Or maybe spending more money on finding a cure for AIDS? How about revising the welfare system, so that only those who intend to one day stand on their own two feet receive assistance, allowing more people access to the system?
Slavery is over - racial injustice is not. Stop apologizing for things you can't change, and start focusing on things you can make right, instead.
