The unsung heroes of Kent State University

Abstract:
As I ran in the back halls of the Student Center to get to my locker and go to work, I ran into a custodian holding out a piece of candy for me. "It's Halloween," she said. I grabbed it and said thanks. Before I knew it, I was in my work clothes, working and thinking no more of that simple act of kindness - ironically, I was eating the piece of candy I was just given....

Agreed....thanks for such a great article. Most of the people that work at Kent really enjoy their job and have been here a while (from what I've experienced at my campus job).

Great article. We don't see enough about the ones that do the jobs that we take for granted. Someone changes lightbulbs, fixes toilets, mows grass, etc. We don't think about it until one of these things needs to be done. Although staff is here to take care of students' needs, it is really nice to see a student who appreciates their efforts.

Your best ally may be the one you overlook...

My parents worked in education and health services when I was a child. They taught me to respect everyone from the top administrator to the cleaning person, mail clerk, or doorman. It's true - not only do these people deserve to be treated with basic respect and decency, but they also often know a lot more about "how things work" than the people who are supposed to be in the know.
When I was in high school I used to stay after school to talk with the custodians. When I was in college I got to know the woman who cleaned the music building. When I worked at another college after I graduated, I spent time talking with the cleaning service personnel and the security guards. It's amazing what these otherwise labeled "little people" had to offer in knowledge AND camaraderie.
Thanks for sharing your insight - keep up the good work!
