Yeah...no income tax increase in "twenty-six years" and the best recommendation some "Pabst Blue Ribbon Panel" could come up with was to "cut the fat" of course, meaning city jobs! All while Kent State Univeristy has been bragging on it's increase in student population throughout the years. Just what the hell did you think was putting the strain on Kent City finances, eh? C'mon, it ain't rocket science, folks.
Um...fyi...besides the local public univeristies, the only other region in this area that must accomodate such a daily(cyclical) influx of non-citizens as Kent City realizes when classes start up is the Montrose area of Akron and...that place is nothing but a money-making/income tax producing machine dedicated soley to bussiness, unlike the KSU environ where most of the thousands of students are lucky to make minimum wage! Think about it. The folks comming into Montrose don't pay any property taxes either, but, wow, do they generate the income taxes!
Now, given the fact that the City of Kent is willing to use eminent domain against certain of it's land-owners in order to keep development moving along, I wonder how long the City Fathers/Mothers are going to allow KSU to own acreage within the Kent City Limits and keep same exempt from any and all property taxes? I mean, it's not like the land is even part of the Univeristy proper, is it? The Univeristy could sell it an put the proceeds into some foundation investment fund and the City of Kent would have the land back on the City/School tax rolls.
