Americans no longer tallest people in world

Abstract:
LINCOLN, Neb. (U-WIRE) - It's official: Americans are no longer the tallest people on Earth. That honor now goes to Europeans, including the Dutch, Norwegians, Danish and Germans.

According to the Annals of Human Biology, Europe has overtaken the United States in the height department, a distinction the Americans had for the last 200 years....

Perhaps the immigration policies of those countries are not as liberal as those of the United States and so the U.S. population is composed of many more races that are not historically as tall as the limited ethnicity of the the European nations.

Well being an American in The Netherlands I can make some statements. First off, when I moved here 3 years ago the Dutch had just claimed the 'tallest people' award, so this story is out of date. Second, the Netherlands has a more liberal immigration then we do. In fact the kind of people who immigrate are from Marocco and Surninam, not exactly the 'height gifted' type nations.

To answer the other question of polution, the area of the country that I live in is some of the worst air quality for all of Western Europe. I mean you are talking about a country that has 16 million people, 4 million illegals, TONS of temporay forgeiners and way too many cows. Think about if Manhatten had cows!

I am fully convinced it's the way food is processed. They eat just as much junk food, love to go to Burger King. National dish is french fries. The point is, is it is cooked in better oils, consumed in moderation, followed up with everyone - even old ladies - rides bike.

Get with it US!

Perhaps if they compared apples to oranges and measured the heights of ethnically similar groups rather than all white europeans against a mixture of hispanics, asians, blacks and whites?

Of course, why make meaningful comparisons when you can use it for disingenuous hype and propaganda?

Yes that's right! America is the only place with mixed ethnicity. Europe is full of only tall, blonde haired, blue eyed, white people.

12million illegals to 300 million people compares nothing to 4million illegals to 16million people. that's nearly 25 percent.

Um, many of those alleged 12 million have names like Moira O'Connor! Many/most of the so-called illegal aliens are people who legally arrived in the US and then overstayed their visas. Pretty easy for an Irish person in Boston or New York!

So please, enough of the racism.

Dave and Harvey are correct. Euro nations are still mostly single eithinc groups. This article was obviously written by someone with a left wing agenda. Notice how they ignored the multi-ethninticy of th US and claimed that we are shorter because of preservative laden food and polluted air. Its hard to find buildings and mountain sides desolving in the US but common in Europe from the Acid Rain. The first thing many Europans say when the come to the US is "Its so clean here".

BTW I'm in Europe 1-2 months a year.

Clearly you have never been too much into books but too much CNN have made you as smart as you are.
And don't lie - you can't even show Europe on the map let alone spend there 2 months every year..redneck !

Left Wing agenda? Of course she does deserve to be called out on ignoring that we have traditionally shorter races in our society; I don't see any bias on this story. However I really do wonder how much it matters if Americans are the tallest, it seems really stupid to me to fight not being as tall when we have cancer, aids, and strange bird disease that theoretically morph and kill us all, or do nothing.

Amen. I was thinking the same thing. Why is it an "honor" to be the tallest nation in the world? Why would this matter?

Also, the article is really height biased (towards taller). The last part about Human Growth Hormone was given without any criticism what-so-ever. Why should we be drugging our kids to make them taller? When does it stop? Shouldn't we just tackle height discrimination if that is the problem?

First of all, as someone else said, this is old news.

Second, our air has gotten progressively cleaner over the past 60 years. It's cleaner now that it was for the previous couple of generations. I do this for a living, but anyone who knows anything about air pollution would know this.

Thirdly, heights have increased as nutrition has increased, whether it's junk food or not.

The increased number of immigrants from less tall ethnic groups is more sensible speculation than this silly, off-the-wall, uninformed, and irresponsible speculation about junk food and air pollution.

Boy, nothing like scapegoating immigrants for everything...Will you all be blaming Mexican immigrants for the high rate of obesity in the US next time? How about blaming them for the high suicide rate, highest rate of anti-=depressant drugs in the world, epidemic cancer death rates, and number of deaths from diabetes related illnesses? God forbid that we look to our own eating and lifestyle choices for any of these problems.

What an ethnocentric, dim-witted, xenophobic bunch. A mind is a terrible thing to waste...

bob

posted 3/10/07 @ 2:15 PM EST

Dawn - there's no scapegoating here - go do your own study and you'll find Americans of European decent are actually TALLER than previous generations (avg. height of European-American males is now closer to 6')

BUT, when you factor in the immigration, THAT is what reduces the average height.

This is neither good nor bad...simply a fact that the "average" American male is 5'9". And this MUST be a result of an introduction of shorter immigrants, since the height of the average European-decent natural American male citizen is nearly 6'.

Do the math.

Again, neither good nor bad, but is less divisive than this "news article".

The comments crying foul about the ethnic backgrounds fouling up the stats are hilarious. Do any of the people who wrote them actually believe European nations are ethnically homogenous? If anything, their immigration policies are much more open than America's. Walk through London and you will see every nationality and ethnicity on Earth well represented, I swear.

And as for the "Oh no, Illegal Hispanics!!" comments, I have one word: Spain. I know there's other ethnic backgrounds mixed in, but there's plenty of European in there too.

London is not exactly a representative of continental Europe. The British had one of the most far-flung colonial empires, which tended to encourage immigration and resulted in a more diverse population. Nationalism and a certain degree of racism were facts of life in Europe for some time, to a degree which most Americans would consider absurd. I will bet that most contemporary individuals would have found little difference between the peoples of Austria-Hungary, but that nation was comprised of more than half a dozen groups who were ethnically distinct and considered themselves separate from the rest of the population.

The Nordic countries in particular were fairly isolated from immigration and are among the most homogeneous nations you will find. Even Germany, with its millions of guest workers imported after World War II, is comprised of more than 80% native Germans. Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, and Denmark have similar demographics; this is discounting the fact that all of these related countries consider each other's immigrants to be foreign. Finland, for example, is 98% homogeneous. In contrast, the United States has 31 different groups with more than a million members, to say nothing of the hundreds of smaller groups.

I've got no stand one-way or the other on the issue of who's making us shorter or why that might be, but I did want to correct the impression that European countries were incredibly diverse and awash in a sea of immigrants.

The funnyest part is:

"We (Americans) eat a lot more preservatives and additives (than Europeans), and the food is processed differently here," Snyder said.
Another reason why Americans are on average shorter than Europeans could be the result of more pollution in the air, Snyder said."

It's like a reporter asking a loser in a sports competition, what went wrong ? The point is, nothing went wrong, the winner was just better.
The question that should be asked is, how come the europeans are so tall ?
As a European, I am disgusted by the way in which you Americans think about politics. This is biology, not politics. If the article says americans, it does not mean people from zimbabwe.

So, wait. Let me see if I understand this. If you're a *white* American, you should be counted in the height study, but if you're a *non-white* American, you shouldn't? Then again, statistically speaking, blacks comprise about 12% of the total U.S. population, and as an ethnic group, aren't they quite tall on average?

More basically...who cares how tall or short we are???

Hello. My name is Weird. I find this quite interesting. For years we've been getting taller through better medical care etc... and now we are getting shorter. This clearly should tell us something. America is not what it could be. It's time to give Mike Gravel a shot in my opinion.

Even if other ethnic groups are shorter and bringing down our average, that is a story for Fox news to break, it's right up their right wing agenda alley.
