Abstract:
Joe Rinehart seems like any other average Joe. He's married, has a son and runs his own local business. But he also happens to be hiding something....
I am Joseph's mother and appreciate reading the article within Kent State University's paper. We are proud of our son's accomplishments. Marcus Rinehart his brother and spouse Karen Cotterman Rinehart, both have graduated from Kent State University. His father, Sherida Rinehart, graduated in 1955 or 56 from Kent State University.
However, I am still a senior there. I last attended Kent Stark Branch, Shakespeare history subject from Dr.Joan Parkes and Dr. Tom Sosnowski, last winter semester. I still need aproximately two subjects with adverage of A or B to graduate. The Stark Branch new Dean and I laughted about probably being 90 prior to my graduation. After all I am presently 74 years old. Joe's sister, Christine Fay R. Kohler graduated from Hawawi University, and Christine's husband Michael Kohler graduated from Kent State Unviersity during the 1970's prior to hus lifetime carrear in Air Force now is a Major, retired. William, Joe's younger brother died Jan 24, 2004, but he also attended Starch Tech, Kent and Air Force Electrical Technical School in Illinois, during the 1970's
My grandfather Clarence Lyons graduated from Pittsburgh, Pa. with an engineering degree, and patitent many of hsi inventions that helped steel mills and other business during his lifetime. He died three months prior to Joseph's birthday, February 14, 1957. My great grandfather Dr. Davis during the 1800's graduated from medical school, and later taught there at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He practiced his medicine in earlier years at Johnstownm, Penn. but after the 1889 Johnstown Flood, my mother's, Shirley Randolph, parents: Dr. Davis and AlMeda Rhodes Davis moved to Robertsville, Ohio. Dr. Davis continued his practice until his death in the early 1900's. Joseph was under a lot of pressure, to graduate from the university of Kent State. But he also was married and had two children, Edlyn Jean and James Rinehart to his first wife, which meant he worked and went to college on the G.I. Bill. They both, Janet Baker Rinehart, and Joseph worked dilligently during those couple of years of college. As he is now continuing to provide for his wife of 11 years, Rose Bond Rinehart and two children, Jeremiah and Schanna Rinehart. He also has three stepchildren, Eddie, Kyle, and Schannon Bond. Kyle is presently in an Army base taking his training. Schannon is also attending college in the state of Virginia.
We wish the very best for our children, and Joseph has proven to us that he has become a wonderful son, that provides as best he can for his family, and community service for all that needs it.
Who is responsible for writing headlines at this paper?! Almost every time I read one, it doesn't correlate to the article. For example: Kent resident may have been first to... Uhhhhh... The article says Ravenna resident.
Read what the reporters write, then make a headline, idiots.
Hello, I am Joe's step-son, Kyle. I am 24 and enlisted in the united states army reserve. When I first met Joe before my mom married him, I had a chance to see his business while he was still selling CDs and CDroms at the cemetary house where we once lived. He once worked with APK selling internet account which his company was known as Config.sys. When things declined between him and APK, he separated from them and took along with him those who were loyal to him. With them, they worked together getting "Config.com" off the ground. Since then, I have seen them at there worst of times, and continue working hard everyday to get to where they are now. Now not only do they offer internet serves, they offer webspace which I think is very neat! They are excelent role models when it comes to, "Hard work really does pay off!" And by the way.... they have TWO kids now... Jeremiah 10, and Shoshanna 2.
This is great that he will now be helping non-profit groups with their websites. So now he will be helping to change the world for the better and using his experience to do a great thing.
I am pleased to see Joe getting his due so many years later. I was one of his 'computer geek friends' back then, there were 4 of us sharing that old house at the cemetary, running pre-internet bulletin board systems (BBS's) and helping him with selling CD's and other early efforts to get these things off the ground.
Joe gave some of us a chance to get our feet wet in this online world while we were studetns at Kent State (as well as an inexpensive place to live). While all of us from those early days some 16 or 17 years ago have since moved on to other things, I know we all benefitted from knowing and working with Joe. My career working with computers certainly benefited from those years of us collectively banging our heads against the wall while configuring the latest high-speed modems (I still remember our excitment when we got our first blazing fast 9600 BPS CompuCom modem prototypes) and networks, and even learning a bit about business and marketing along the way.
So, Joe, I know you've heard it before, but now its publicallym stated: Thanks...for your support and your friendship all those years ago and ever since. You gave a geeky college student a place to live and a chance to work with some other like minded computer geeks around what at the time seemed like some crazy ideas and I think we've all benefitted from that and more importantly weƤve all been able to give back in our various ways.
I'd like to thank the Kent State School of Journalism, Reporter Glennis Siegfried and Photographer Daniel R. Doherty for finding my Internet background interesting enough to take the time to write about it!
It appears that some of the comments were oriented around corrections or constructive criticism which I feel compelled to respond to.
Mom, thanks and I'd suspect most mothers would be proud of their child getting some press, but Geez did you have to write a book. Also, I seem to remember Marc transfered to Akron University in his senior year and I always thought he was a traitor to Kent for doing so... One of us is wrong, but who really cares? After all, it's all about Kent State which is where I got my first inspiration for technology and exposure to the 'net ;)
Annoyed, my Business manager made the same observation although not publicly. My response to him was that I told the reporter that I spent most of my life from the age of nine living at Grandview Memorial Park Cemetery which my father Sheridan (KSU Alumni life member) established in 1966 and is located almost in the exact center of Kent, Ravenna, Brimfield, and Rootstown. In fact, I was a Tenderfoot in a Kent Boy Scout troop, a member of the Masonic youth organization Demolay which met at the Kent Masonic Temple, until I took the enlistment oath for the US. Marine Corps in Oct of 1974. Upon my return from the Marines in 1976 I lived in The Kent State University Allerton apartments for married students and later moved to Indian village until I divorced, left KSU, and moved back home. Both of my two oldest children Jean and James were born during the period I lived in Kent and both went to Kent schools. Then there is also The KentOhio.Net project I helped established with Kent Artist Ken McGregor who has since taken the community directory project completely over. Ken the Web Master and I the 'net geek are also involved with the web site for http://www.mainstreetkent.org and I could go on...
From my perspective, I just may have more ties to the Kent community than I do with my residence in Ravenna and the first thing I told the reporter is that instead of discussing the many projects I've found myself involved with world-wide over the past almost two decades, I'd like to focus on those that involved the Kent community since that is where the article would be seen ;)
Kyle, Jeremiah turned 11 in October. I did error with my interview in that I said he was 10. In fact, both my wife Rose and Jeremiah have corrected me several times after his birthday. In any regard, I can't blame the reporter for the lack of information and correct ages of my beloved family. The fact is, counting the three step-children I gained when I married my wife Rose we are surrounded by a total of 7 wonderful kids and 5 are now young adults, 2 of which (Jean and James) have given me 5 grand children. I indeed enjoyed the laugh of a lifetime when I told James and Jeremiah that they could argue over which of my sons the article referred to.
Business Opportunities, I thank you for your kinds words! It is true that I enjoy working on projects where either the profit or non-profit principles know that they have the ability to "change the world" ;)
Steve Steinberg, our mutual interest in data communications has indeed been an amazing ride! I enjoyed the opportunity to share the old farm house at the cemetery with you, Andrew Pardoe, and Carl Knorr during the years where networking Bulletin Boards was the coolest thing (to us) prior to the commercialism of the 'net! Your friendships with me though the peaks and valleys is what friendship is all about. To watch your educational paths turn into respected careers makes me smile and know that I've been surrounded by "good people" throughout my own life and career path.
For as excited that I am to be recognized for that little act of placing an ad some 15 years ago, I'm equally proud to have known Dr. Steinberg who teaches Geospatial Analysis (something computer mapping), Andrew Pardoe AKA AP who is on Andrew Pardoe is the program manager of the Microsoft Silverlight team, and I almost want to place one of those historic $5.00 "cool factor" bets that Carl Knorr is still calculating numbers in his head faster than one could possibly type into a computer! It all started for us due to Kent State University....
Although, I've seen the name of my company config.com and I has been in some pretty respected media over the years, this article of the Daily Kent Stater shall likely mean the most to me throughout my life. Thanks for sharing my story as well as one could expect with only a couple hours of actual interview time.
If you took the time to read my ramblings, you may also like to see an actual scanned copy of the last ad I ran in Computer Shopper before the 'net became commercial several months later at URL:

Much diserved and over due. I remember in 1996 I first came around config. Heck I was a kid then and joe and billy showed me the ropes of computers. Now I am a Sgt in the Marines. I thank you joe everyday I seen your boot camp pic, so I had to go for it Oorah joe thanks for all the help. Semper Fi..!
