Abstract:
A lonely flag lies on the shelf in the back of Jean Chrest's white car, saved for an occasion she might find a veteran's grave without one....

unpatriotic

Putting flags on gravesites and making sure they are there all year long does absolutely nothing for the families of these soldiers/veterans who've died. Who helps the surviving spouse and or children?

Good job giving yourself a pat on the back, but it's no where near enough and far from sufficient. What help does one who's passed need?

Your time would be wiser spent helping the thousand of homeless veterans or under employed veterans and their spouses.

Where to start? Go to the Portage County (or the county you live in) Veterans Service Commission. If you want to support anti-war veterans/soldiers go to Iraq Veterans Against the War's website http://www.ivaw.org or Military Families Speak Out http://www.mfso.org.

In closing, the reason we don't have the type of "celebrations" we used to have for the 4th of July is because (I hope) American's are re-evaluating patriotism and questioning the recent definition of it. I for one do not wish to be catagorized as a patriot if it means being modern day colonialists, uncaring of people of other nations. You won't see me out "celebrating." I'll be at home with my veteran who, when hearing fireworks, will believe it's an IED blowing up.

PEACE!
